Saint Elizabeth became a nun at the monastery of Saints Kosmas and Damian in Constantinople, when she was still quite young.
She was known for her strict asceticism. Elizabeth always went barefoot and only wore a single piece of clothing, even in the chill of winter. She did not pamper herself and did not bathe. She kept the fasts and sometimes did not eat at all.
Once for a period of three years, Saint Elizabeth did not allow herself to look up at the beauty of the sky. Her hope was in the infinite love and beauty of God alone.
Saint Elizabeth’s life shown with the fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22,23) The purity of her heart allowed her to see God, as the Lord Jesus Christ promised (Matthew 5:8). This purity also caused Elizabeth to be bathed in divine light as she said her nightly prayers.
Saint Elizabeth died in peace in 540 AD.
We commemorate this Holy Virgin on April 24.
Holy Virgin handmaiden of the Lord, Elizabeth, pray that we may only have eyes for the beauty that endures, our Heavenly Bridegroom. Amen.
