Saint Agatha lived in Sicily.
This glorious young woman was arrested for her Christian faith. When the judge tried to tempt her into leaving her faith to become his wife, Saint Agatha chose the Heavenly Bridegroom, Christ. "I run after Thee and shall dwell with Thee forever." (from the Orthros hymns)
Saint Agatha was martyred after many cruel tortures in 251 A.D.
The ancient Greek name "Agatha" means "good."
We honor this Holy Virgin Martyr on February 5.
Holy Virgin Martyr Agatha, strengthen us to choose suffering for Christ's sake over any earthly freedoms. Amen.
