Saint Mary of Palestine lived in the holy city of Jerusalem.  She read the Psalter in the great Church of the Holy Resurrection.

When Mary became aware that her loveliness caused men to have sinful thoughts, she decided to take action. She refused to be a stumbling block to others.  Therefore, Mary left the city and went to live in the desert to save her own soul.

She took with her only one basket of beans and a jug of water.  By the loving kindness of God, however, the basket and jug were never emptied.

Mary was later found by followers of Saint Kyriakos.  These same men later buried her.

We commemorate this Holy Virgin on September 29.

The Hebrew name Mary, means “sea of bitterness.”

Holy Virgin of the Lord, open our eyes to see how the way we dress and behave may cause others to sin.  Teach us to keep our beauty secret and to appreciate the gift of purity the Lord has entrusted to us.  Amen.
